On Sunday Ian Hards was unable to play for personal reasons so Bill MacGillivray had to find a partner at really short notice; enter stage right Adrian Webb. Bill & Adrian played a blinder on Sunday afternoon against Alex Armstrong and Ty Grover-Jones.
Although the game was akin to an Austrian Civil War the two armies were very different. Bill & Adrian had a fairly well balanced Austrian force whilst Alex & Ty had gone for minimum infantry with lots of artillery (16 field pieces + 4 battalion guns) and lots of hussars. Like all games in the competition, there were terrain objectives to capture; in this game each team had to capture a specified fleche positioned on a hill. To make it interesting - especially so as it was the last game - the terrain objective points were doubled and no points were awarded for capturing the other objective. Adrian did an exceptional job of capturing his terrain objective using just one brigade, comprising of 2 hussar regiments, a Chevaux-leger regiment and a Jager batallion! More to the point he captured a battery of 5 enemy guns and was only driven out towards the end of the game when superior enemy numbers started to out flank him. Both teams said that it was one of their best games.
Below LeftSome of the Allied troops that Matthew McVeigh painted up especially for the competition. The whole army was painted in just a few weeks using figures from Essex and Lancashire Games.

Above Right- These Saxons owned by Steve Butler were also painted especially for the competition - and in even quicker time than the Allied Army!!! By Sunday lunch time Steve and Mike had fought their Saxons into second place against the first (and possibly only) McHugh Father-Son competition partnership. Dodo looks on in awe as Steve demonstrates the use of a tape measure.
Left Don McHugh's winning Russians advance towards the enemy.

Right A final look at those Allied troops - this time fighting the Austrians.
Left Bob Ewing and partner using French against Richard and Brian on Saturday afternoon. Right Don & Dodo discuss tactics prior to the final game .

The sun sets on the Austrian road to glory in the last game.
